Náš příběh začíná na Jamajce, kde se jedna ovdovělá kosmetička – Carol Fosterová (Suzanne Somers) – zamilovala do rozvedeného stavitele Franka Lamberta (Patrik Duffy). Láska na první pohled způsobila, že se ještě na Jamajce vzali… Později sice zjistí, že sňatek nebyl právoplatně uzavřen, ale ani tato komplikace je nezaskočí a svatbu zopakují. Frank se se svými dětmi a prasetem ihned po návratu z dovolené, resp. vyzrazení manželství s Carol, nastěhuje k Fosterovým, čímž oběma stranám způsobí pořádný šok. Frank by sice Fostertovým nijak nevadil, zato jeho ratolesti ano a mezi dětmi začne nefalšovaná válka.
JT (Brandon Call) se s Danou (Staci Keanan) již znají ze školy, kde jí (snad po nevydařené schůzce) strčil do skříňky krysu. Karen (Angela Watson) je Al (Christine Lakin) pro smích kvůli tomu, že myslí stále jen na krásu a kluky, zatímco Alicia (Al) je takové zvláštní děvče, které vyrůstalo mezi chlapci, má rádo sport a nesnáší typicky “dívčí” záležitosti – např. módu nebo make-up. Mark Foster (Christopher Castile) je rodinný génius, má však pro svou přílišnou chytrost problémy (nejen) s dívkami.
Aby to nebylo málo, v kosmetickém salónu, který je součástí domu, pracuje Carolina svobodná a neustále vdavekchtivá sestra Penny Baker (Patrika Darbo) a jejich matka Ivy (Peggy Rea), které rády přispějí do rodinného ruchu. Ze strany Lambertových je tu kromě otce a dětí navíc zvláštní synovec Cody Lambert (Sasha Mitchell), který se usídlí v karavanu na dvorku.
S přibývajícím časem se hrany obrušují a problémy mezi rodinami ustupují do pozadí a spíše se soustředí na spory JT-Dana/Al a Dana/Al-Karen. Cody časem odchází do Ruska, Frankovu firmu jednu chvíli decimuje pohroma jménem Flash (Jeff Juday), Carol si přivádí přítele Jean-Luca Rieupeyrouxe (Bronson Pinchot), s nímž také ve městě vybuduje nový salon. V prostorách starého je pak vytvořen byt pro JTho a jeho nejlepšího kamaráda Riche (Jason Mardsen), kterého ovšem zbytek rodiny – alespoň zezačátku – příliš nemiluje.
Frankvi a Carol se také narodí společné dítě, dcera Lilly (Emily Mae Young). JT si najde přítelkyni – šikovnou a pohlednou automechaničku Samanthu Milano (Alexandra Adi) a Dana se oproti vší logice zamiluje do Riche.

V době, kdy se Patrick Duffy vrátil k natáčení Dallasu (tedy kolem roku 1986), měl ve smlouvě podmínku, že po jeho skončení mu bude nabídnuta role v dalším seriálu a jelikož toužil po změně, byl v roce 1991 jedním z autorů koncepce Kroku za krokem, kde si chtěl odpočinout od role Bobbyho Ewinga 
. Druhou stopu také zanechal v podobě synovce Codyho, protože si vybral Sashu Mitchella, s nímž měl dobré předchozí zkušenosti. Sashovi bohužel v roce 1996 rodinné problémy a zatčení zabránily pokračovat a se seriálem se symbolicky rozloučil až v samém závěru.
Seriál vznikl na objednávku stanice ABC, která potřebovala pořad do pátečního bloku rodinných seriálů TGIF, kde měl nahradit Plný dům (Full House), jenž byl pro vysokou sledovanost přesunut do hlavního vysílacího času v úterý. Zajímavostí je, že seriály se měnily (ať už kvůli jejich dokončení nebo zrušení), ale Krok za krokem se držel po sedm sezon, poté jej bohužel potkal podobný osud – ne však pro nízkou sledovanost, ale víceméně pro nedostatek financí, vyčerpání tvůrčího potenciálu autorů a především se nehodil do koncepce stanice CBS, jíž byl v roce 1997 ještě s několika dalšími seriály, které stihl stejný osud, prodán… ABC také prodeje později litovala, když sama téměř pohřbila TGIF.
Několik úvodních epizod bylo natočeno v létě 1991 a 21. září pak následovala ostrá premiéra. Seriál sklidil nadšené ohlasy a tak byla od podzimu do jara 1992 natočena celá první série. V první řadě vystupovali Frank, Carol, Dana, JT, Karen, Al, Mark, Brendan, Cody, Penny a Ivy, tyto dvě postavy však byly od druhé řady vypuštěny.
2-5. řada se natáčely vždy ve čtyřech vlnách – první začátkem podzimu, druhé před Vánoci, třetí po Novém roce a poslední na jaře, přičemž se vysílalo od září do května, s měsíční přestávkou přes Vánoce. Od 5. řady přibyla postava Lilly, jež se narodila na samém závěru 4., Rich, po zmíněných problémech Sashy Mitchella odchází Cody a konec 5. řady kazí postava Flashe, který jej měl nahradit.
Poslední dvě sezóny se odlišují. V první řadě byl Brendan Call v září 1996 při přepadení postřelen do obou rukou a v době, kdy se zotavoval ze zranění, se natáčení pochopitelně zastavilo. V té době ale bylo natočeno jen prvních 7 epizod 6. řady, zbytek byl dokončen na jaře 1997 a vše se vysílalo od března do srpna. Také se zde nevyskytují žádné vánoční nebo halloweenské speciály. Poté byl seriál prodán CBS, která jednotlivé epizody 7. řady vysílala nepravidelně a derniéra v podobě té poslední, 160., se konala 5.6.1998…
