Hlavní hrdince Ally McBealové je dvacet osm let a je absolventkou práva na Harvardově univerzitě. Zatím je svobodná, přestože větší část svého života byla silně spjata s přítelem Billym Thomasem. Kamarádili se spolu od sedmi let. Hráli si dohromady na ulici, společně také prožili dobu studií a později se stali milenci. Když Ally byla vybrána ke spolupráci v prestižním právnickém časopisu Law Review a Billy ne, jejich cesty se náhle rozešly. Po nějaké době osud zavál Ally do “malé” advokátní kanceláře, kterou vede její známý ze studií – Richard Fish. Ten se v prostředí soudů a právníků pohybuje jako vychytralý žralok, který přesně ví, kde a kdy navázat ty správné kontakty. Právě on nabídne Ally profesní útočiště. A ironií osudu zde hned první pracovní den potká svého Billyho. Ano, skutečně – toho samého, s nímž se kdysi tak dlouho a důvěrně znala. Jenomže Billy je teď ženatý s krásnou a chytrou blondýnkou… Komediálně laděný seriál Ally McBealová je vystavěn na rozporu dvou světů: toho všem dobře známého, reálného – a světa fantazií. Díky zobrazení vnitřních představ a vnitřního hlasu hlavní hrdinky máme přehled o tom, co si Ally skutečně myslí o klientech, svých spolupracovnících, mužích anebo ženě svého bývalého milence. Její vnitřní život tak navíc dostává originální, bohatší a komediální polohu. Scenárista seriálu, David E. Kelley, nenechá představitele svých postav, ale ani diváky, “odpočinout”: často nečekaně mění vývoj děje během jediné epizody, jindy nachází překvapivé navázání “příběhu” hlavní hrdinky hned v následující části. Pro představitelku Ally byla v konkursu vybrána herečka Calista Flockhartová (nar. 11. listopadu 1964 v Illinois) – vysoká, štíhlá, obdařená příjemnou a nekonveční tváří s velkýma očima a širokým úsměvem. Svou dráhu začínala na divadle, kde zaujala jako zlá Nataša ve Třech sestrách. Na Broadwayi debutovala úspěšně ve Skleněném zvěřinci, za roli v této hře obdržela cenu Nejlepší nový talent. Ve filmu se poprvé vyrazněji zablýskla v dramatu Petera Cohna Opilci, později hrála v úspěšné komedii Ptačí klec a v nejnovější filmové verzi Shakespearova Snu noci svatojánské. Málokdo z diváků tuší, co někdy obnáší odvrácená tvář účinkování v seriálu a s tím spojené obrovské popularity: například před samotným natáčením televizní producenti donutili Calistu, aby pro roli Ally zhubla více než deset kilo, což této fyzicky křehké ženě příliš na zdraví nepřidalo. V současné době Calista Flockhartová žije se známou hereckou hvězdou Hollywoodu, kterou není nikdo jiný než Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Svědek, Hon na ponorku, Vysoká hra patriotů a také titulní hrdina volné Spielbergovy trilogie o Indianu Jonesovi).
